Glenn Curtis Seemingly simple little songs, the more you listen them more the depth of the songwriting comes out. I love the everyday life in the songs and in the singer's voice. Early Riser, Drugs Are All Right, A Wise Old Man and Waiting On The Wrong Bus are all gems on a fantastic album. Favorite track: Early Riser.

Early Riser 02:04
this heart of mine it's an early riser the rooster crows and i'm wide awake this heart of mine it's a real slave driver i don't think it knows it's supposed to break i packed my past in a big black sack left it with the rubbish by the railway tracks this heart of mine it's an early riser now this heart of mine it's a real hard worker always got a hand in this and that this heart of mine it's a real slow learner i don't think it knows it's supposed to crack i packed my past in a big black case put a smile on both sides of my face this heart of mine it's a real hard worker now this heart of mine it's a real bullshitter stays up all night just chewing that fat my dad used to say you can't kid a kidder this heart of mine's not sure about that i've ditched my past in a big black hole i've got a bone to pick with my soul this heart of mine it's a real bullshitter now

woke up last night from an awful dream instead of blood i had nicotine sometimes i miss amphetamine and i know that it misses me went to a party somewhere late last night told myself i had a real nice time but it's not the same with just a glass of wine i think the drugs are all right i got this job: they do these random tests but i haven't even had one yet i could get away with anything, i bet and one day i think i might i know there's downsides: it's plain to see they've all been pointed out to me it's probably not as good as it used to be still i think the drugs are all right now i'm not saying i want some heroin i don't play games that i can't win wasting your life's not such an awful sin its bark's worse than its bite i've ended up with a real nice life i've got two kids and a pretty little wife don't tell em i said this, but my advice is i think the drugs are all right

like a fox in the headlights like a cloud in the rain i tried to hide in the sunlight my shadow gave me away but i thought this time'd be different but every time that i see you coming round i know that i'll take it laying down when all the fighting was over i still had nothing to say every time i get closer something pulls me away but i thought this time'd be better but every time that i hear you gaining ground i know that i'll take it laying down like a fox in the headlights like a cloud in the rain i tried to hide in the sunlight my shadow gave me away but i thought this time we could make it but even now you're still waving as i drown and i know that i'll take it laying down

well they told me when i was young never lose sight of where yr from then when i started looking back they said stop living in the past but i'm turning into a very wise old man and i'm learning as little as i can do you think we should start again cos you were always laughing then but it's funny how things work out yr not laughing now i saw the shadows on the wall and i was thinking i'd seen it all but when the shadows started to sing i knew i hadn't seen a thing so let the leopard change its spots i'm sticking with what i've got you can go and try something new i've got better things to do

Birthday Boy 03:01
they packed him up and they put him in a suitcase he's ended up in the middle of the ratrace one more day, waiting for the money to come and they sold his toys: they dropped him in the ocean the birthday boy playing with a shotgun one more day, waiting for the money to come and they clap their hands and they jump for joy and gather round the birthday boy screaming and singing i can still hear em shout saying you'll never get out lock your doors: pretend you've got a secret that friend of yours looks just like a policeman one more day, waiting for the money to come write your lines but they still tell your mother i think my wife is sleeping with my brother one more day, waiting for the money to come burning clothes on a fire in the backyard his father's ghost hanging from a lanyard one more day, waiting for the money to come and there he goes, running in the ratrace nine-years-old with a tie and a briefcase one more day, waiting for the money to come

i'm always waiting on the wrong bus trying to get the night to fall i was walking through the graveyard and i never saw a soul at all you were spotted by a waitress sitting reading baudelaire the flowers of evil i see em blooming everywhere i don't think i wanna live here anymore come a little closer or close the door just another soldier fighting a forgotten war my kids believe in magic but my belief is growing thin i trained as a mechanic but i can't even fix a drink i know i said i had a good time but really, it wasn't fun i'm nearly forty-years-old now still telling you that i'll die young i checked into a hotel nobody saw me signing in i'm erasing all the traces of all the places i have been and all this really happened it's only the facts i've changed i'm still waiting on the wrong bus losing at the loving game

Border Song 02:37
i told you then that i would come but i'm still stuck at the border you give yr heart to everyone but yr only following orders the lights are on: there's no one home i'm wilting like a flower i never thought i'd be alone at such an awful hour across the land the lover's curse has blessed all of these people here's the hand and here's the church but there's no one in the steeple beneath the bed i wrote yr name and tried to find our purpose but the ones who said they'd share the blame they were only here to hurt us and i know you tried and i know you'll say that none of this is surprising you've still got all you gave away but i lost what i was hiding i only wish i'd been around to cherish every minute but i searched for years and all i found yr heart was never in it at all

the kids are throwing stones at the bride and groom i'm playing the piano in a bombed-out room she's standing by the window taking a photograph i hope the war doesn't end too fast there's a little bit of hope in everything you touch i pulled on the rope - it didn't do that much they're protesting the government in london town i'm gonna go and have a look around all the old folks keep saying it's a different world overaged men with underaged girls i don't even know what you expect me to do i only came here cos you asked me to and i'm not the doctor - i'm the doctor's son i can be the doctor til the real one comes that dead bird'll open up its mouth and sing i can waste all day not doing anything in the market square where the pensioners sit the pockmarked pigeons peck on their own shit there's a man going round and he's calling your name i was dead before and i'll be dead again

if i leave here where would i go any road i travel always leads me home and if i stay here what would i do when i'm away from you if i stand my ground or if i fall to my knees will i see your eyes turn away from me you're after a miracle but you know what they say walking on water wasn't built in a day and if you leave here where will you go any road you travel only leads you home and if you stay here where will you be when you're away from me the last thing i heard as you were falling asleep tonight is a promise tomorrow won't keep you're after a miracle but you know what they say walking on water wasn't built in a day you say we're changing and i know that it's true but if we didn't change what else would we do you're after a miracle but you know what they say walking on water wasn't built in a day

you never climbed that mountain you never wrote that book never really did anything you always said you would last night in my apartment i was talking with your ghost we didn't know what happened til we read a facebook post in the graveyard there's a barren patch of land here lies a promising old man and i heard you had a daughter i heard she's doing okay but there's something in the water here and the water's in her veins we fell as light as feathers from your parent's loft if you ever get to heaven i hope the landing's just as soft and one thing i'm still learning is to keep the things i've got not lose em while i'm searching for all the things i'm not and i never climbed that mountain i never wrote that book i never really did anything i always said i would
